The Great Alaskan Adventure - Day 2

July 11th 2013, Seward

Today we traveled about 2 and half hours South of Anchorage to Seward.   There we took a boat tour of the Kenai Fjords National Park.  It was beautiful!  We saw hump back whales, orcas, puffins, otters, seals, a bald eagle and porpoises.

Our boat for the day

Ready to go!

Alaskan Beer on a boat in Alaska? Yes!

Not only were the animals amazing, so was the scenery.   We also could not have asked for a nicer day - it was gorgeous!

We were "mugged" by a mama hump back and her calf. This is where they circle the boat several times and the mama shows the calf the safe and dangerous parts of the boat.  The captain said he has only experienced it a few times - guess we were lucky!

The animals were amazing - but then they take you to Aialik Glacier  - wow!  You come up on this huge wall of ice, the first thing you notice as you approach are chunks of ice floating in the water, then you feel the temp drop and once you are up close and personal it is amazing!  You can actual here the glacier crack and it sounds like thunder.  Then if you are lucky you get to see pieces fall off!

A piece of the glacier the scooped up so you could feel it

After our boat tour we decided to drive a few miles to hike up to the surface of Exit Glacier.  The had signs along the trail that should you were the glacier was at certain times.   It was crazy to see how long it has recessed thru the years.   At first the boys didn't want to go - but they enjoyed the hike and when we reached the top - seeing the glacier up close and personal was worth it!

We headed home and had a beautiful sunset at 11:30pm!!!
