Road trip to Alpena, MI - Day Seven

August 1st 2012 -

After hockey camp this afternoon we headed over to the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center to catch a boat ride on the glass bottom boat the Lady Michigan to see ship wrecks out in The Thunder Bay National Maritime Sanctuary. (Alpena Ship Wreck Tours).

It was a beautiful day for a boat ride.

Once out on the bay they take you to several wreckage sites.  It is amazing how well the ships are preserved.  The boat has a glass bottom and viewing windows.  Sometimes you get a good view, sometimes you don't.  Seems snorkeling or scuba diving would offer the best view and they encourage you to come back out to do so.

Part of the tour takes you into the loading dock of the hugest cement factory in the world that draws from one quarry.

We also passed by a factory the produces quality particle board...18 wheelers pull in full of wood chips, they attach them to a ramp, then raise them up and let all the chips just fall out.  It was crazy to see an 18 wheeler rising into the sky!

Along side the dock they have huge pictures of wreckage.  This one was my favorite, it was on some sort of material and when the wind blew it looked like the water was moving.

After the boat trip we headed down the street to the Fletcher Street Brewery.  It is a start-up brewery, you can taste, buy a glass and have a snack.  They don't bottle yet.  They did say you could bring in your own bottle and they would fill it for you :)

All the beers were tasty, but our favorite was the Thunder Bay Bock.

After the brewery we headed back to Downtown Scoops...they have so many flavors to try we may have to go back every day this week!

Today, Andy got his ice cream in a chocolate chip cookie bowl!

Downtown Alpena has flowers everywhere!  Huge hanging baskets and the cutest bike racks I have ever seen!
