Road trip to Alpena, MI - Day Eight

August 2nd, 2012 -

Andy continues to have a blast at camp. He is learning a lot and making improvements.  Can't wait to get him to tryouts at home with all his new skills!

After camp we headed North to the 40 Mile Point Lighthouse. This lighthouse is still in operation.  The lighthouse was built in 1896 on 22 acres that were purchased for $200!

There are 53 steps to the top - flip flops aren't aloud so I headed up in my bare feet :).

Right down the beach from the lighthouse is the wreckage of the wooden steamer, Joesph S. Fay.  The ship was built in 1871 and was headed to Lake Huron on October 19, 1905 towing another ship.  Both ships were loaded with Iron Ore and hit heavy seas.  The captain was able to get her to shore and below is what is left of the starboard side.

We headed back to Alpena and to Nowicki's Sausage Shop.  Home of the 1979 Worlds Record longest sausage at 8773 feet!  We bought a few Landjaeger's  - a smoked snack stick.  We tried the Beef & Swiss, Cherry, Honey BBQ and Original. All were very good.

Decisions, decisions!

On our quest to not eat at chain restaurants we found a place online called Jacks Landing Inn - a review said it was off the beaten path - they weren't kidding!  Three miles down a dirt road, we arrived!

Cute place with home cooked meals and a view of the water.   They have cabins you can rent and seemed very popular with fishermen.

  1. You should be a travel writer specializing in little out of the way restaurants! I'd read everything you published!
